What is the average memory access time for a machine with a cache hit rate of 80%, cache access time of 5 ns & main memory access time of 100 ns? It is given that simultaneous access memory organization is used.

      For simultaneous memory access organization,

we have

Average memory access time = H1 x T1 + (1 - H1) X H2 x T2 

= 0.8 x 5 ns + (1 - 0.8) x 1 x 100 ns = 4 ns + 0.2 x 100 ns = 4 ns + 20 ns

= 24 ns
